Last week I was wondering how I’d feel if the Giants lost. The verdict is in and the winner is “Eh….whatever.” This embarrassment resembled the Super Bowl against the Ravens, but on a much smaller stage and against a much less impressive defense. After getting waxed that badly in the wild-card round, there aren’t a lot of “what-ifs” clouding my mind, which makes a season-ending loss much easier to deal with. The Giants did everything extremely poorly – stopping the run, stopping the pass, passing, running, special teams. The whole enchilada. The only excusable element is stopping the run – they talent at LB is so putrid that even perfect execution wouldn’t have shut down the Panthers RBs. Everything else just sucked in a major way.
In a performance so abominable, it’s hard to isolate any specific complaints. Here’s a try: the game was close in the first half (mostly because the league mandates that each team begins with the same score), so let’s start there. A big play in the first half was an illegal contact penalty on Justin Tuck on a 3rd and long. It gave the Panthers a first down and they went on to score a TD. You might be wondering, “who’s Justin Tuck?” The answer is that he’s a very promising rookie defensive end. If you already knew who Justin Tuck is, you might be wondering, “why is a very promising rookie defensive end in coverage on a 3rd and long?” That’s kind of where I was. I’ve been over this concept several times in this space so I’m only going to beat the horse until I get through the first layer of muscle – let your pass rushers rush the passer. Let you coverage guys cover the receivers. Let your guys do what they’re good at. I know it sounds simple. That’s because it is. Unfortunately, Tricky Tim seems more concerned about the mental masturbation of scheme development than letting his players do their job.
Continuing to ride Mr. Lewis for a moment, as I stated in the preview,
The injury to Antonio Pierce was the turning point of the season. The difference between the defense with and without Pierce is both massive and shocking. This is not an excuse; it’s more a disturbing observation. Injuries happen, and generally linebackers should not be considered irreplaceable. The loss of Pierce was exacerbated by the losses of Emmons, Green,
On offense, the Giants did nothing. Absolutely nothing. The only guy who I’m not going to blame is Tiki. He’s done enough to earn a pass. The OL was mediocre against a tough
Overall, the Giants played their worst game of the year in the biggest game of the year. Everything sucked. Credit is due to the Panthers, who had a solid gameplan and executed it flawlessly. Overall, this season exceeded expectations and should be considered relatively successful, but that in no way excuses the hideous performance by Big Blue today. This was only the 3rd playoff loss ever in Giants Stadium – the Vikings collapse and the Flipper game being the others – and it was obviously the most lopsided. The Giants were outplayed, outcoached, outhustled, out-everythinged in every single phase of the game. It was a travesty.
This morning I was walking around lower
It’s on to hockey and college hoops.

The Terrell Buckley thing was ridiculous. When Aikman mentioned during the telecast that they were going to use Buckley on Smith, I thought he was joking (I even wrote it down in my diary--"Troy made a funny joke today."). I know more about the Giants roster than I do any NFL team save for the Skins, and I'm not sure I actively knew Terrell Buckley was on their squadron. That's a bit of a melon scratcher.
And, seriously, how do you feel today if you are a Bengals fan (other than the normal--"lonely and bummed out that you're stuck in Cincinnati")? Your team finally makes it to the playoffs for the first time in 15 years, and your franchise QB tears his ACL and MCL on his first attempt?
I'd also like to thank the NFL for continuing to schedule Redskins playoff games on Saturdays. I got good and sauced on Saturday and missed most of the second half of the Pats-Jags game (and apparently so did Byron Leftwich) as TJ and others were electing a new pope in my basement.
They should either move the Super Bowl to a Saturday or listen to Jerry and make the Monday after a federal holiday...in honor of Vince Lombardi, Pete Rozzell and Mel Kiper Sr.
Oh, and nice job--it was "Out-Man-ed" on the back and "Big Boo" on the front. Coincidentally, "Big Boo" is what Greg's crazy black girlfriend called him back in '03.
That pope won in a landslide...
and I just had that exact conversation about the Super Bowl with the 40ish uber Redskins fan a few cubes down. Given he has already projected his Skins to a Super Bowl berth, and subsequent victory of course, he has taken Monday off, and would like to swap Columbus Day for Super Bowl Monday as work holidays. I gave that notion my strongest white.
I don't show his confidnece as to the Super Bowl...but I'll take it.
I will say I'm pretty surprised that the Redskins are almost a 9 point dog this weekend. The Redskins have only lost one game by more than 7 points this season...and three by more than 7 under Gibbs second reign. I thought the line would be more like Seattle -5.
That should be "share" his confidence...it's early on a Monday.
I'm coming off a nice little weekend in which I went 4-0. I parlayed all the games so I might be buying a new HDTV in time for the Super Bowl.
Skins +9 is a steal. Seattle will do what they do best, flop. Hasselback's, like Detmer's, have no business in the NFL playoffs.
The Bengals got it much worse than anybody. That's about as bad a game as you can have. T-Buck and Brent Alexander got burned on the post for Smith's 1st TD. They're almost 70 years old combined. Nice. Good thinking.
Saturday football is so much better. I give you a ton of flexibility. And Super Bowl Saturday is the best idea ever.
The bye has to be worth a few points. This is a blowout round of the playoffs.
Bob Glauber of Newsday is stealing my stuff:
"Tiki Barber hit it right on the head yesterday when he said after the Panthers' 23-0 win that the Giants were badly outcoached. Offense, defense and special teams, the Giants lost on every count. And badly at that.
But they were outplayed, too. And outhustled. They were out-everythinged."
The Terrell Buckley mention got me too. I was completely unaware that he was even in the league anymore. I was under the impression that his run with the Pats had been his last NFL experience.
The Bengals catastrophe did make me feel a LITTLE better about the Bucs giving away the first 14 pts on Saturday...a little.
I give the Giants' defense a little more of a pass. The linebacker thing was a big issue. You can't assign your better cover safety or extra DBs in the nickle glibly to cover the outside #1/#2 receivers if you correspondingly have zero confidence your linebackers can cover anyone inside. The Giants' safeties and extra DBs were chasing TEs and TBs all afternoon- as I don't think Coughlin felt they had any chance of covering those guys with just their existing LB corps.
No, I want to kill Manning. The Panthers are slick enough on defense, and are coached up "real good", that Tiki was not going to have a great day without Eli demanding some respect. He can't do that.
As an Eagles' fan, not a Sunday goes by where I don't delight in Eli's "progress". I don't get this guy's fan club. I know I am supposed to think he scares me- but I can't do it. I look at Eli- and I see a guy in a Giants blazer in 2008 handing Paul a card that reads "with the first pick the Giants select quarterback...."
Statistically, he was arguably the worst QB in the NFC East this season...if you only count McNabb and not McMahon. But, while I'm not waking up in cold sweats thinking about Eli's future, I think he will improve significantly and eventually be a top 5 NFL QB.
That said, Peyton's year two numbers were superior to Eli's in every category...including face sweat.
I'm not in the bag for Manning, but in his defense, the Giants have put a lot on his plate. He threw a lot of passes - and not dump-offs, either. He also had a ton of responsibility in calling protections and making adjustments at the line. Personally, I think that they gave him too much to do, but I hope that it helps him long term.
I like Roethlisberger a lot -- probably more than Manning -- but if you look at what each of them is asked to do, it's no comparison.
Whils his pct and QBR were low, he did throw for the 2nd most yards in the NFC and tied for the 2nd most TDs and his 24/17 TD/INT is pretty solid for a 2nd year guy. His low QBR almost seems to be a statsistical quirk -- look at his other stats compared to some other QBs. They don't look that bad. Then look at his QBR -- it's terrible. I'm sure it's mostly because of his low pct, but it still looks weird.
should be - tied for the most TDs in the NFC
Redskins Notes for Monday:
Sean Taylor will be fined $17,500 for spitting on Michael Pittman on Saturday. This amount represents Taylor's entire playoff share for participating in the Wild Card game. Previous attempts at spitting on Pittman have resulted in a black eye and forfeiture of half of the marital assets.
Taylor will not be suspended for this weekend's game versus the Seattle Seahawks.
The Redskins have placed DE Renaldo Wynn on IR with a broken arm and an outdated box hair cut. The have activated LB Nick McNeil from the Practice Squad. Phone calls to former pass rush specialist James "Jumpy" Gathers were not returned.
CB Shawn Springs, LT Chris Samuels and RB Clinton Portis are all expected to play this weekend versus the Seahawks. Springs has responded well to treatment for a sprained groin, and was quoted in today's Washington Post as "feeling the best I've felt in a month." Springs reportedly wanted to play in Tampa on Saturday but was held out by Trainer Bubba Tyer.
Portis has sustained injuries to both shoulders, one of which was aggrevated on his touchdown run versus Tampa Bay. He is expected to wear a neck roll for Saturday's game versus Seattle, and ass-less chaps for his Thursday press conference with reporters.
LT Chris Samuels re-injured his left knee in Sarturday's game. Apparently the injury occured early in the 4th quarter when Bucs DE Simeon Rice was "handing Samuels his lunch" for the umpteenth time. Samuels was unable to participate in the final series of Saturday's game, but is expected to start on Saturday. It is not known if he will reprise his role as a human turnstile o passing downs.
QB Mark Brunell reported no ill effects from the knee he injured week 16 versus the Giants. While Coach "Joe" Gibbs called Brunell's performance "super gutsy," Congressman and former Nebraska Head Coach Tom Osbourn called it "a shade conservative."
Team sources confirm that TE/HB Chris Cooley has now reportedly "fucked" all of the Redskins cheerleaders. Cooley and his wife refrained from comment.
Just to clarify on the last point, it has come to the attention fo Wheelhouse insiders that Cooley has been caught fishing off the company pier with no less than two Redskins cheerleaders. Itgoeswithoutsaying that no one who frequents this space would ever engage in such behavior. And yes, Johnny White Guy is married.
ex-wife, according to the Post this weekend. of additional note, cooley likes to hang out in cut-off redskins sweatpants that he decorated with hand-drawn logos representing AC/DC, Metallica and other metal bands. rock on, christopher.
Ah, that must be somewhat recent. I know he was married when he was drafted.
I also heard that Cooley's eyebrows and hairline are in early discussions about a possible merger.
Perhaps Cooley has also borrowed Stewart Stevenson's "Winger" t-shirt.
Cooley's work in those BMW of Alexandria ads with Doc Walker and JB are going to raise some eyeborws over at Eastern Motors. He might look good riding bitch in a H3 Hummer with The U Crew and Chucky Atkins.

Ooh, I wouldn't touch the Skins game...even with the 9 points.
I fear bad times ahead, but will don my good luck Skins T-shirt with much hope...
And speaking of wagers...Senior Whitney, the Devils are nearly half way to earning those 2 cases of imported lager...
That Sports Bureau is keeping Elias much busier than expected.
Gionta is having a good year, but they really miss Stevens, Niedermeyer, and Elias.
McBad...
And, no Jerry, I haven't forgotten about the 42 clams I owe you...
"Senior Whitney" - painfully true double entendre/typo
Marcus Vick, quickly rising on the Trailblazer's draftboard:

And, does anyone ever "brandish" anything other than a firearm? I remember when Frisbie used to brandish his balls at inopportune times...but now that he's engaged that's probably all but a happy memory.
...or lack of tilde on script's keyboard resulting in phonetic spelling... Bama.
Get psyched for Duke - Maryland tomorrow night...
If Marcus Vick reacts to 17 year-olds taunting him at a McDonald's by whipping out a pistol, I'm pretty sure he is gonna have some trouble when blitzed by an NFL defense.
Last Boy Scout style??
